Job Description:

The Clinical Nurse Specialist performs advanced practice nursing (clinical practice, education, consultation, collaboration and research) in assigned areas. This includes guiding the delivery of expert clinical nursing care, providing consultation, collaborating with other health disciplines in care delivery, providing leadership to ensure standards of nursing care and evidence based standards of patient care are provided, collaborating with other nursing leadership roles in ensuring educational outcomes are met and other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM Qualifications:


Masters Degree in Nursing. Completion of required education prerequisites to be certified as a CNS.


Three (3) years (6240 hrs) clinical staff nursing in acute care or at least two (2) years (4160 hrs) functioning as a CNS in acute care.

Skilled in working across the continuum of care.

Ability to apply advanced nursing practice in clinical care delivery.

Ability to identify educational needs, plan and implement transfer of knowledge.

Ability to assess and diagnoses needs and achieve outcomes.

Ability to perform effectively as part of a team as well as work independently.

Ability to take initiative.

Ability to respond and manage change.

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Ability to manage multiple simultaneous tasks and prioritizes appropriately.

Licensure/Registration/ Certification:

Licensed as a registered nurse by the State of Minnesota.

Credentialed as a CNS through a national certification board.


Guides the delivery of expert clinical nursing care.

a) Collaborates regularly with nursing and other disciplines in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating nursing care for challenging, complex or high risk patients or populations.
b) Provides direct consultation to nursing staff and other disciplines in the care of patients regularly.
c) Serves as a role model to nursing staff in the delivery of patient care on a continual basis.
d) Contributes to patient care through patient/family advocacy, incorporating respect for and acknowledgement of cultural diversity and individual needs.

Leads and collaborates to ensure standards of nursing practice and evidence based standards of patient care are provided.

a) Assesses and evaluates nursing practice and patient care for assigned areas on a regular basis to ensure standards are met with special attention to patient safety, timeliness, effectiveness, efficiency, equitable and patient centeredness.
b) Maintains knowledge of regulatory influences (CMS, Joint Commission) and applies those standards to nursing practice on a continual basis.
c) Maintains knowledge of infection control principles and practices and applies those standards in practice on a continual basis.
d) Maintains and communicates knowledge of best practice guidelines for patient populations served on a continual basis.
e) Assesses needs and based on need, develops plans that ensure standards of nursing practice and standards of patient care are provided.
f) Collaborates regularly with other nursing leaders and education roles to ensure standards of practice and standards of care are developed and maintained in written documents (policies, procedures, critical pathways, practice guidelines, care protocols).

Collaborating with other nursing leadership and education roles in ensuring educational outcomes and staff development needs are met.

a) Assesses needs of assigned areas for staff development and competency development on a regular basis.
b) Evaluates the global outcomes (e.g. staff competency) of initial staff orientation and education programs at least biannually.
c) Collaborates with other education roles to ensure curriculums for initial orientation and ongoing staff education are meeting educational needs of staff to ensure the delivery of quality care.
d) Collaborates with other education roles to provide clinical coaching and mentoring of staff as requested.
e) Provides consultation to clinical educators in the development of clinical preceptors on a regular basis.

Additional Information:

CNS Experience Preferred-We would accept a Nurse Practitioner in this role as well.
Recent Acute Care and Critical Care experience required.
